Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What kind of music do you play?
The solo violin works beautifully for classical, folk, religious and popular songs or show-tunes with strong melodies - for example 'When You Wish Upon A Star' or 'A Whole New World'. Have a look at the song-lists for more suggestions.
The violin/guitar duo works really well for a range of musical styles including pop, jazz, classical, film themes and folk.
The Violin Jazz Quartet play Hot Club style jazz of the 1920s/30s/40s - an upbeat, acoustic style of jazz that will create a great atmosphere without drowning out your guests' conversation!
Q. Can we choose what pieces you play?
A. Any pieces listed on the song-lists can be chosen for the wedding ceremony.
If you have a song/ tune in mind that isn't listed, we are very happy to offer advice on whether it will suit solo violin or the violin/guitar duo and wherever possible will play your special request.
Q. Do you need a power supply?
A. For solo violin or violin/ guitar duo no power supply is needed and we can set up just about anywhere.
If the room is particularly large or there are a large number of guests the instruments can be amplified in which case one plug socket will be required.
Q. Do you play for receptions?
A. The violin/ guitar duo is perfect for the reception part of a wedding if you are looking for a mix of musical styles or acoustic versions of popular songs. The Violin Jazz Quartet is also a great choice for drinks receptions if you are looking for a more vintage feel or jazz material.
The solo violin is best suited to ceremonies.
Q. Can you play outside?
A. As long as the weather is dry and fine we can play outside for your drinks reception or for outdoor ceremonies. If it rains at all we would need to move indoors as rain damages the instruments. Too much wind can also be a challenge as it blows music away, so a sheltered spot is best!
Q. Where are you based and what area do you cover?
A. We are based in Durham and are available for weddings and events in County Durham, Teeside, Tyne & Wear, Northumberland and North Yorkshire.
Q. Do you play for other events besides weddings?
A. Yes we can play for family parties, wedding anniversaries, special birthdays, corporate functions, valentines or even proposals!
Q. What is the cost of hiring a solo violinist?
A. Prices for solo violin start from £150 and from £250 for violin/guitar duo.
Q. What does the price include?
A. The price includes advice on music choices prior to the wedding; provision of all equipment where amplification is required; set up time of 30-45 minutes prior to the performance time; the performance itself; travel costs within Teeside, Count Durham, Tyne and Wear and all other expenses. For events in Northumberland and North Yorkshire there may be a small additional travel charge.
Q. How is payment made?
A. A deposit of fifty pounds is required at the time of booking, and the balance is paid two weeks prior to the wedding/ event.
Payment can be made by bank transfer or by cheque.
